From the history of the library

1897
Establishment of the Kladno Popular Library Association; 22nd May: inaugural general meeting of the Association; 5th September: the Library launched its activities with its first day of lending in one room of the Kladno Sokol Hall.

1899
The Library moved to larger premises on the second floor of the Civic Savings Bank (nowadays the State District Archive building).

1901
The Municipality took the library under its administration and the Association Library became the Municipal Library of the Royal Mining Town of Kladno.

1928
The Municipal Council allocated larger premises to the Library in the Kladno Chateau.

1940
A Regional Section was created at the Library, with collections of books by Kladno authors, publications about Kladno and books published or printed in Kladno.

1941
The creation of Greater Kladno brought together the libraries of previously separate municipalities. Kladno Library became a central library with branches in Kročehlavy, Dubí a Rozdělov.

1952
Kladno Library assumed the role of a district library.

1954
The premises of the former District House became the new headquarters of Kladno Library.

1960
Under regional reorganization, the Library was given regional procedural powers.

1963
The Central Bohemian Regional National Committee based in Prague became the Library founder.

1965
The Library assumed the role of a Research Library.

1969
The Library acquired the legal deposit privilege for Central Bohemian Region publications and began to systematically collect regional literature from the Central Bohemian Region. The "Central Bohemian Region in Print 1967" bibliographical yearbook first came out.

1979
The Library received the nationwide legal deposit privilege for books.

1980
The legal deposit privilege was extended to include periodicals.

1983
The Regional Library was renamed the State Research Library in Kladno.

1985
The library opened a gramophone record and tape recorder cassette loan department.

1991
The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic became the Library founder. Under Act of the Czech National Council No. 281/1991 Coll., the receipt of legal deposits of institute of higher education textbooks and lecture notes was discontinued.

1993
The Library became the publisher of Čtenář, the professional magazine for libraries.

1995
The Library obtained an internet connection. Pursuant to Act No. 37/95 Coll., on Non-periodical Publications, the Library lost its nationwide legal deposit privilege for non-periodical publications, except for the output of publishers from Prague and the Central Bohemian Region.

1997
The Library celebrated the 100th anniversary of its foundation. Computerized loans procedure launched at the loans department.

1998
The Library opened a Kladno Region Information Centre for travel and civic information.

2001
The role of Library founder passed from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic to the Central Bohemian Region. On 6th December, the Central Bohemian Regional Council approved the Central Bohemian Research Library foundation deed.

2002
On the basis of decisions made by the Central Bohemian Regional Board, the Kladno Town Board and the Kladno Town Council, the town function of the Central Bohemian Library was separated off and an independent Kladno Town Library was established as of 1.1.2003.

2003
As of 1st January, the Library lost its legal deposit privilege for non-periodical publications brought out by Prague publishers (Act No. 320/2002 Coll., on the Amendment and Repeal of Certain Acts Involving the Termination of Activities of District Authorities), while retaining its legal deposit privilege for non-periodical publications published in the Central Bohemian Region and for periodicals published in the Czech Republic.

2004
Launch of a new version of the computerized Advanced Rapid Library system was completed. New storage space with compact shelving was created on the ground floor of the headquarters and the public WC was reconstructed.

2005
The Library headquarters underwent extensive reconstruction. In September, newly refurbished premises were opened to the public with a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction.
